Last Friday, the Lowell Red Devil football team squared off against the Munster Mustangs, a conference opponent. The result: a statement win, bringing them to an impressive 7-1 record. It’s the best start they’ve had since 2020. The Devils dominated from the jump, with young sophomore running back Tymothy James as the top performer, accumulating 274 rushing yards on just 16 carries and 4 touchdowns. Junior WR Gavin Gutierrez caught 2 long touchdown passes from senior leader QB Brody Kalwinski, one going for 69 yards and another going for 54 yards. On defense, top performers included senior Matt Gangwisch, with 4 TFLs, and sophomore John Judd with his first career interception.

The final score ended up being 49-14, and this has been a theme for the team all year. Since their first loss in week 1 to a tough Crown Point squad, Lowell has gone on an outstanding 7-game winning streak. They outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points per game during this stretch, with their only close game coming against a very quality Hobart team. In the final seconds of that game, junior kicker Dylan Bisacchi nailed a game-winning field goal that gave the Devils the victory, 20-17. He’s been lights out kicking for the team, and he was no different in this one. It’s been a great regular season so far, and they look to keep the momentum going. But, they still have one more goal to hit.
So, what’s next? This Friday, the Devils play a ferocious Andrean team. Andrean has had a great season so far, with a record of 7-1, the same as Lowell. With Andrean and Lowell both sporting a perfect 5-0 record in conference play this year, it means both teams clinch the conference title with a win. The Red Devils are seeking first place in the NCC conference for the first time since 2021, but in that year, there was a tie for first between 3 different teams. This year could be their first outright conference title since 2017. This was the most recent year the Red Devils went to state. The team is on track to make history this year. With so much on the line, it will be an extremely tough and hard-fought game with both teams hungry for a win.
