Lowell High School Theater recently performed Meredith Willson’s The Music Man. This play is a classic musical about Harold Hill, a traveling con man who poses as a boys’ band organizer to swindle the naive residents of River City, Iowa in 1912. He sells instruments and uniforms, promising to teach music, but plans to skip town, until he falls for the local librarian, Marian, and brings positive change to the town.
I got to see and even meet many of the actors and actresses behind the show. For example, I was able to meet Brad Miller, the actor who played the male lead of Harold Hill. I even got to talk to some of the quartet, being Jacey Squires and Oliver Hix, played by Dior Pockrus and Logan Haskins respectively. I was even able to meet Kenny, one of the paint crew heads.
The show was of amazing quality. The props and costumes were top notch, and the makeup even fit that of the time period. As someone who knows many of the theater crew members, I know the level of work this group of individuals put into perfecting the designs. There were many struggles as show and tech week slowly closed in. Yet, they put their heads together and got to work to make a show they could be proud of.
After the performance, I watched the original musical written by Meredith Wilson, directed by Morton DaCosta, produced by Kermit Bloomgarden, and choreographed by Onna White. The showing was an almost 1:1 recreation, with almost imperceivable differences unless you are intentionally looking for them.
All in all, Lowell High school Theater did spectacular with this production. I am greatly looking forward to seeing next year’s productions.
