At LHS, we have seen a number of new clubs starting, and this club is certainly one that has gained a lot of student participation. Student Christian Fellowship is a club that focuses on learning about and growing in Christ. Many surrounding schools have a similar club, so creating a club that supports students in this way was essential here at LHS.
Last year, Colton Chandler, a student who graduated, brought the idea to Brody Kalwinski because they wanted to invite some of the football players to join them in a Bible study. It was not until this year that things really started moving forward. Now, Brody and senior Logan Fraze have taken over leadership, with additional help from senior Tanner Jinks. Their goal was to create a space for people who have questions, do not have access to a church, did not come from a family of faith, want to learn about faith for the first time, or simply want to continue growing in the faith they already have.
In schools, there has been an increase in students embracing Christianity. More students are turning to Christ in high school, so having a club at LHS that provides support and community has become crucial.
The club aims to build a supportive environment by holding weekly meetings every Thursday before school. During their meetings, they engage in Bible studies, prayer, and discussions about the verses they read. They have also invited Pastor Foster from Bethel Church in Crown Point to teach students more about the Bible and how to apply its teachings to their lives. According to Kalwinski, the club will help “give students the opportunity to learn lessons, ask questions, be leaders, break comfort zones, and serve Christ.”
Ultimately, Student Christian Fellowship is confident that it will play a meaningful role in students’ lives. It offers them an anchor in their faith and can help them navigate their academic journeys as well.
