Student Council is a club meant to represent and advocate for students; however, the organization was not truly student-led until this year.
In previous years, the club was led by Ms. Davis, Mrs. Ison, and several other faculty members. There were many improvements made during his time, such as the hallway decorating contests, but the organization was mostly led by teachers. This all changed this past fall. Over the past few months, we have seen a tremendous increase in student participation. A few students in the organization started a TikTok account and used it to advertise Homecoming. Because of that, 200 more Homecoming tickets were sold this year compared to last year. Their video also reached an outstanding 30,000 views.
With the shift to the organization being student-led, more opinions are being shared, which has helped Student Council grow. A student-led organization also allows members to develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. This not only improves the club, but also helps students develop important skills they may not receive during the regular school day. Student Council Sponsors Ms. Davis, Mrs. Ison, Mrs. Camery, and Ms. McAllister are also always available to guide members as needed.
Member Jack Brugos says, “There are more voices being heard,” and, “We work around what students have been saying lately so that dances are more catered to what students want.” This shows that now that leadership has shifted from teachers to students, there is a positive change that allows for more focus and creativity through student input. President Kathryn Haas agreed, saying, “It helps because the students are more involved, so you hear more of their opinions, which helps make the club better by having students share their ideas on how to make events better.”
As a result, this change has not only increased participation in the activities the council oversees, but has also empowered students to take on roles that shape both themselves and their school.
Student Council is a great club to join if you want to get involved in the school and community. If you are interested in joining, you still can! Email the club president, Kathryn Haas, at [email protected]
