Lowell High School junior and Student Media standout Hunter Mallory has been shining brightly this year. From earning the title of October Student of the Month to having his work published in an official newspaper for the first time, Mallory is quickly becoming a student to watch.
Outside the classroom, Hunter leads an impressively busy life. He is currently enrolled in the welding program and preparing for the upcoming Local 597 Pipefitters competition. On top of that, he is one of Lowell’s top wrestlers. With more than 12 years of experience in the sport, wrestling has become a major part of his life, and one he remains deeply committed to. Hunter’s dedication stretches across everything he does: athletics, academics, welding, and his contributions to the Student Media program.
“I really enjoy writing,” Hunter said. “I never really was much of a writer until I figured out all the things I can do with my words and saw how loud my words can speak.” Hearing a student speak so passionately about writing is refreshing, especially when many young people today claim to dislike it. His first article for The Pitchfork Press, titled “Building Futures One House at a Time,” was recently featured in an issue of the South Lake County Sun. Hunter is the first student in the Student Media program to be published with our new local newspaper.
Hunter admitted he was surprised when he learned he had been selected as Student of the Month. “I really didn’t expect it. I knew I was nominated, but I never really expected it to be me,” he said. “I feel like I’m a decent student, but not that good.” His humility stands in contrast to the hard work he puts into school, wrestling, and Student Media.
Hunter’s Student of the Month nomination was written by Student Media adviser, David Martinez. “At the time I wrote the nomination, I did not know Hunter’s first article was going to be picked up by an outside paper,” Martinez said. “I saw the effort that went into his article, however. Hunter was very intentional about the details he included and made sure to ask for feedback multiple times, knowing that his article was going to be read by others. That kind of perseverance and drive made him an excellent candidate for ‘Student of the Month.'”
Hunter initially joined Student Media because he enjoys taking photos. “I enjoy being active in the community and being close with everything in the school,” he said. His involvement has made him a go-to person for classmates who need help or information. He brings curiosity, reliability, and a wide base of knowledge to the class.
As Hunter enters the remainder of his high school career, there is no doubt he will continue to excel. His achievements so far set a strong foundation for future success, and the Lowell community eagerly awaits what he will accomplish next.
