After 12 seasons as the head varsity basketball coach, Coach Joe Delgado has stepped down, and plans to continue his coaching career at IUN as an assistant coach. He provided solid years for the Devils and was a respected figure throughout the school. Throughout his entire coaching career, he compiled a 213-278 record with Lowell and Hammond Clark. From 2006-2008 at Hammond Clark, he won three sectional championships in a row in a dominant three-year run. His overall record at Lowell was 118-156, which can be highlighted by a 20-6 record in 2015-16, which remains as one of the best season’s in the programs history. He was a well respected coach within Northwest Indiana.Â
Coach Delgado influenced many of the kids to come through Lowell throughout his time here. A couple of his players have gone on to play D1 college basketball or even higher than that. Coach Delgado coached Christopher Mantis from 2018 to 2021. Mantis currently holds the all time scoring record at Lowell with 1,949 career points. He went on after high school to play Division 1 Basketball at Appalachian State, later transferring to Maine. Now, Mantis plays in the NBA G-League for the Capital City Go-Go, which is the G-League affiliate for the Washington Wizards. Another great player Delgado coached was Cayden Vasko. After graduating, Vasko spent a post graduate year at the Don Bosco Institute in Crown Point. Following this, he also played D1 basketball at Central Michigan for two year, then transferred to Wofford for one year, and this upcoming season he will be playing at UCF, which is a power conference school.
Overall, Coach Delgado has coached some great teams, at Lowell and at Hammond Clark. He has influenced players and had players come through his program and be successful after high school. He deserves a thank you from the Lowell community for the work he has put in for the last 12 years. But, basketball at Lowell does not stop here. Lowell is currently on a hunt for a new head coach that will bring some change into the program. It is not yet known which candidates will be in consideration for the head coach position, but whoever steps in will be ready to come in and change the culture of Lowell basketball.
