The gymnastics team is ready for the new season. I interviewed one of the girls on the team, sophomore Kendyl Fidler, to learn more about how she’s feeling heading into the year.
I first asked her how she felt about the possibility of doubling the number of people on the team. She replied, “I am very excited that our team is growing new members. I want to have a team where we can create a combative and strong dynamic, and I think more teammates are going to play a key part in that.” I think Kendyl has a great perspective on this, and she is aiming for a really powerful team with the new members.
I then asked if she was excited about the new season. She said, “I am looking forward to this season. This year with the number of people we have, we will count as a ‘team’ score, which is very exciting. Also, seeing if you’ll make it to the post-season is always nerve racking and something I look forward to.” I believe she is totally right—team scoring adds a whole new level of excitement and pressure!
The next question I asked was whether she felt confident going into the new season. Kendyl said, “I am honestly very confident going into this season. After having a year of high school gymnastics under my belt, I am more confident in my training and excited to see how this season will go.” It sounds like Kendyl is coming in with the perfect mindset and a very solid foundation.
Lastly, I asked Kendyl what her favorite skill is to do. She said, “My favorite skill to do is a Yurchenko on vault after landing it at last year’s sectionals.” I think this is awesome—landing a Yurchenko at sectionals must have been such a rush and an incredible feeling!
I am incredibly proud of Kendyl and so excited to see the gymnastics season this year. Let’s all go out and support the gymnastics team at their first meet on Tuesday, January 13th! Good luck to all the girls, and I hope you all have a great season!
