The boys basketball season is well underway, and with only three games left in the season, the Devils look forward to sectionals. The battle at Hanover Central between KV, Illiana, Hanover, River Forest, and Lowell begins on March 3rd, with the sectional championship taking place on March 7th. During this last stretch of games, the boys look to build some momentum. They play all three games at home, squaring off against Chesterton, Kouts, and Rensselaer. All are winnable in the team’s eyes.
So far this season, some of the top performers include junior Ezra Rumisek and seniors Roan Vasko and Brayden Spearson. Ezra leads the charge on offense, accumulating 11.1 points per game, with his season high being 22 points against Whiting. He also gathered 2.6 stocks (steals plus blocks) per game, which is an impressive number. Roan is the second go-to guy on offense, averaging around 10 points per game and getting the team hype with alley-oop plays. His season high came against Wheeler, where he scored 17 points and led the team to a victory.

Roan and Ezra also pace the team in rebounding, grabbing about 5 boards per game each. Brayden Spearson is the team’s 3-point specialist. He poured in 16 points against KV, hitting some clutch shots, although ultimately falling to the Cougars in OT. Sophomore point guard Aiden Hernandez controlled the ball up the court every game, leading the team in assists and creating for himself when needed. Senior leader Cass Hejnowski served as the ‘glue guy’ for the team, hustling for offensive rebounds every game and providing very solid defense. Sophomore Lucas Brady and Senior Tyler Fredrickson provided solid bench minutes throughout the season, both being viable scoring threats and ball handlers.
Although falling to three out of the four other teams in the sectional during the regular season, the team looks forward and is not thinking about the past. All of those games were played close, and the Devils had a chance in every single one of them. They have learned a lot from those games and will come into sectionals with an underdog mentality. I, along with everyone rooting for the team, should be excited to see what they can do in the postseason.
