On Friday February 20-21, the Boys Wrestling State Finals took place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Sophomore Kameron Hazelett, a returning 2025 state champion, came in ready to secure his second title. During his freshman year of his wrestling career he made history by becoming the first freshman ever to win the 285-pound weight class title in the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals. This year, competing again at heavyweight, he battled through one of the most competitive brackets at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and dominated his way up to the finals, later securing another state championship title.
With his combination of strength, technique, and determination, Hazelett overpowered his opponents throughout the entire tournament. He finished off the day with a victory in his final match by pinning his opponent in the 2nd period making him a state champion once again. His ability to repeat as a state champion again even with all of the pressure and expectations that were held, not only shows his physical might, but also his mental strength throughout the years. Every opponent trained specifically to beat him, but Hazelett did not let that happen. Defending his title shows that he did not just rely on his natural talent, he pushed himself in every way creating more resilience and confidence. Â
When being asked how he stays focused when all eyes are on him, he stated, “I stay focused by going out there and pretending it’s just me and one more person, nobody else.” He then followed with, “My mindset going into the state finals, knowing of the high expectations from last year just made me want it more but also I had to go in with a clear mind.” This shows that Kameron was determined to win another state title. Speaking about how he stays focused during big matches, he stated “I stay focused and calm during crucial parts of big matches by not freaking out.”Â
I then asked Kameron who his biggest supporter was throughout his journey and how coaches and teammates have helped shape his success. He then explained, ”My grandpa has been the biggest supporter throughout my journey. The reason for that is because he’s the one who has put me in wrestling and has paid for my entire life.” ”My team and coaches have helped shape my success by always pushing me to my limits.” This shows how much Kameron is appreciative toward his supporters.
The victory not only marks personal growth for Kameron, but also brings pride to Lowell High School. Championships elevate a school’s reputation, but back-to-back titles create legacies. I then asked what his goals for the next season are, both on and off the mat. He responded, “My goal that I want to do for next season is to just win another state title.” Younger wrestlers now have someone to look up to as they walk down the school’s hallway and have a living example of what’s possible through dedication and years of hard work.”Â
